Choosing sellers, agents and spreadsheet sites with the rate in view

The checks that protect an order have little to do with currency. They come first here. The rate enters at the end, when you compare totals across agents.

How to judge a spreadsheet site before trusting it

Finds lists are easy to make and hard to keep up. Before you trust one, look for four things. Dates: every price, rate or promotion should say when it was read. Working links: open five cards at random and count the dead ones. A named operator and a contact address that answers. And restraint: no star ratings, no 'best' labels, no invented savings figures.

Apply the same test to us. Every rate on this site carries its reading date; the readings log shows when we last checked; the category links are tested before each update; and About says who writes this and how to reach us.

A list that fails these checks may still have good finds. Treat its numbers as rumours and verify them at the agent before you pay.

How to choose a seller on Taobao, 1688 or Weidian

Sellers are where most problems start, and the agent cannot fix a bad one after the fact. Look at the shop's age and rating where the platform shows them, the sales count on the specific listing, and review photos taken by buyers rather than the seller.

On 1688, remember it is a wholesale site: minimum order quantities and batch-to-batch colour differences are normal. On Weidian, many shops show no reviews at all, so seller photos and a quick question through the agent matter more. On Taobao, the same photo often appears in many shops; the lowest-priced copy is not always the same item.

Good sellers answer questions about size and stock. If the agent relays a question and the seller ignores it, that is information too.

How to judge an agent you can trust with money

A trustworthy agent publishes the things you need before you pay: who operates it, what it charges, how long it stores parcels, how claims work, and how you get money back. Oopbuy publishes all five, with some contradictions between pages that we note where they matter.

  • Operator: Openbuy Technology HK Limited, company number 77213008, with a Causeway Bay address on the current contact page; an older notice still shows a Tuen Mun one.
  • Fees: zero service fee on the Service and Fees page, with a short list of optional services in yuan.
  • Storage: 90 days free from receipt, then a paid extension whose limit is described four different ways.
  • Claims: 7 days after delivery or 45 days after dispatch, whichever comes first.
  • Rate: not printed as a number, but readable from the public estimator in five minutes.

The last point is the one this site adds. An agent whose rate you can compute is easier to trust than one whose rate you cannot, even if the number is not small.

Comparing agents by total cost, not by fee line

To compare agents fairly, price one real order in each. Take the same yuan items and the same parcel weight, run each agent's estimator, and convert each total at a mid rate yourself. Then add any visible service fee and the top-up fee for the way you would pay.

You will usually find that the agent with the lowest service fee is not automatically the lowest total, and the one with the narrowest spread is not either. Heavy hauls favour agents whose margin sits on products; light hauls of cheap items often favour a zero fee with a spread. That is arithmetic, not a ranking.

The quote checker handles the conversion part for any agent that shows both yuan and your currency.

Six traps to check before paying Oopbuy

  • Counterfeits. Oopbuy's shopping guidelines say counterfeit or infringing goods may be destroyed at the warehouse, with no shipment and no refund. Do not order them.
  • Prohibited and restricted items. Liquids, batteries, powders and magnets narrow the line list or rule a parcel out.
  • The storage clock. Free storage runs 90 days from receipt. Parcels with no shipping order for too long are treated as abandoned.
  • Deposit orders. Some Taobao items need a deposit and a balance; miss the balance and the deposit is lost.
  • PayPal address. The address on the PayPal payment page must match the parcel address.
  • The display currency. Budget in your money, but add the twelve percent gap before you decide.

Most of these are not about money at all, which is the point: the exchange rate costs you a predictable percentage, while a destroyed parcel or a missed storage deadline costs everything.

Other shopping agents you will also see

Oopbuy is one of many agents buying from Chinese marketplaces for overseas customers. Names you will meet on forums and finds lists include Kakobuy, Superbuy, CSSBuy, Sugargoo, Hoobuy and others. They do the same job, buy, inspect, store and ship, and they differ in fees, lines, storage terms and, always, in the rate they print.

We do not rank them, and we have not measured their rates here. What you can do is take the same reading on each: run their estimator for the same parcel in your currency and in yuan, divide, and compare the divisors. That is a fair test because it uses each agent's own public numbers.

The same five-minute test works on any agent that shows two currencies.

Then compare everything else that matters to you: the lines to your country, the storage terms, the claim rules, and how they answer a question before you have paid them anything.
